Neutral

  • Fair and Bair are annoying to deal with at SH height. Stay on the ground and perfect shield the pellets, or stay above Villager and nair through. Shulk's Bair can also beat the pellets if well-timed and it's hard to punish because of Villager's slow speed.
  • Any time Villager throws his gyroid is a free punish if you're in Jump or Speed art. It has no hitbox until it starts moving, so nair him for free or run up and grab him. Time your throw for throw armor if you grab him too close.
  • His Usmash and Uair make for good anti-air
  • Villager cutting down the tree or making it bloom is a free vision opportunity that kills Villager stupid early and is easy to react to. Don't get overzealous and try to anticipate it, though.
  • You can react to Villager's attempts to grab you due to the long, distinct startup. Buster nair on shield makes it very very difficult to get shield-grabbed.
  • Remember that your jump height in Speed art leaves you more susceptible to eating bairs and fairs, even out of a full hop. Usually Jump art is the better option out of the two to increase your movement opportunities.

Advantage

  • Don't challenge Villager offstage unless he's using his upB. The risk/reward is not worth it.
  • Pressure him and keep him at the ledge, using Buster art to annoy him and rack up a lot of damage.
  • Villager's airspeed is rather slow, so when you have advantage, it should be very difficult for him to land. Catch him with frametrap nairs and Utilts, or cover his drift with a pivot Ftilt/Fsmash.
  • Smash art Utilt kills stupid early and is great for catching his low drift and fall speed.

Other Notes

  • Villager's Lloyd Rocket spawns on frame 1. The Lloyd Rocket goes on a set linear course & won't be destroyed easily as you have to deal a damage of 12% or higher during the frame 1-52 window of the spawn. On frame 53 & beyond however, any attack from Shulk's kit whether it be a Jab1, tilt, aerial, whatever. Any damage works too, so even a Jab1 with Smash art destroys the rocket.

Villager (97)-

  • Down Throw (C)
    • DI up & away, mix up with down and away at high percent. Most common follow ups are nair and fair, both of which can lead into a fair at low enough percent so be aware of that.
  • Back Throw (K)
    • Kills at about 110% from the edge of the stage.
    • Kills at about 150% from the middle of the stage.
    • Also, look at this to learn how to DI this move.
