Shulk 101

Lucario

Community Rating:
+0.5 (Slight Advantage)

Professional Rating:
0 (Even)

Neutral

  • B-reversed ASC makes his landings rather safe, but somewhat predictable. There is nothing much to be gained by countering ASC (countering AS itself is a safer option, although easily baited and still not very safe).
  • Low% uthrow combos can be escaped with Monado Shield, but some (not really) frame traps will still work depending on your defensive option. One example is uthrow → uair (airdodged) -→ D-tilt → re-grab to try to catch the airdodge (can avoid any follow-ups after the D-tilt when in shield art)
  • Lucario is floaty compared to us, and mobility arts make us much harder to catch and somewhat more annoying to deal with due to his mediocre everything speed.
  • Try to mentally keep track of when Aura Sphere is fully charged, especially at your own kill%. While a fully charged AS will definitely kill you, it also takes away Lucario's ASC kill setups, so you can anticipate him wanting to throw the Aura Sphere after not so long to try to get that option back (and possibly kill you).

Advantage

  • Take advantage of Extreme Speed not having a hitbox until the end of the move.
  • Punish on-stage recoveries with a well-spaced nair / utilt / usmash / ftilt ( / vision?), and keep an eye out for times when they fail to avoid the atrocious landing lag.
  • Can also clip Extreme Speed recoveries to the ledge with fair / dair / dtilt. Lucario's offstage disadvantage is not threatening compared to other cast members, as Lucario has relatively slow and short aerials.
  • Smash Art aerials are very useful. Stage spiking for a gimp is usually met with little reward as Extreme Speed can survive from anywhere. It is still worth at high enough % where Lucario will just die anyways from missing their tech.
  • A Lucario above you without their double jump is very uncomfortable, and can be susceptible to juggles due to his slow fall speed and lack of threatening aerials (dair also stalls his momentum). Once again be mindful of b-reversed ASC as it's really gonna be their main option to try to avoid you, as well as Extreme Speeding their way out of trouble.

Disadvantage

  • When facing ASC at the ledge, neutral getup, jump, getup-attack, and staying on the ledge are beaten. Rolling onto stage can only really be punished by releasing the sphere upon a quick reaction (so at low AS charges / percentages where this won't kill it is better than risking an ASC -> usmash), so sometimes buffering a roll can reset to neutral the easiest.
  • Ledge drop -> uair can catch a careless ASC (or shield poke), but leaves you at risk for a punish after if it whiffs (Aura Sphere will hit below the ledge and kill when large enough). Sharking to the other side of the stage actually helps to reset neutral very well, as Lucario does not have the speed to beat you out to the other side.
  • If you suspect Lucario to go for Force Palm as a punish and have the opportunity, rolling away is usually the (pseudo-)safest option, as you will only be hit by the long-reaching hitbox and not likely killed.
  • Be wary of your defensive options when caught shielding against ASC. Good Lucarios will observe your reaction (spot dodge / roll away / jump away / etc) and land a KO if you make it a habit.
  • Usage of Smash Art still remains to your digression, but be extremely wary of using it in neutral vs a high% Lucario because Grade A Cheese can happen. In general, you can treat a high% Lucario like a fellow Shulk with Monado Smash activated.
  • Don't get hit by Aura Spheres offstage.
