Shulk 101

Ganondorf

Community Rating:
+1.5 (Notable Advantage)

Professional Rating:
+0.7 (Slight Advantage)

Neutral

  • Vanilla, Speed or Shield Art. Limit Jump and Buster Art. Avoid Smash Art at mid to high %.

  • Shield Art can help at low %. It can reduce the dmg of Ganondorf's Dthrow follow ups (dash attack) or you can avoid it with your DJ.

  • Techrolling away against sideB is the safest option because it doesn't expose you to FSmash. Once you reach Dash Attack/DownB kill percentages however, you need to mix it up.
  • Visualize the SideB (1/4 to center FD) and DownB (1/2 to center FD). If Ganondorf crouches, he will most likely use ground DownB or Dtilt. If you dodge it, use aerials like Bair. However, if you miss your counterattack, Ganondorf will punish you.
  •  A good Ganondorf will use empty movements to bait. Be campy and space with Fair or Bair. Bait and punish. Beware of his deceptively quick Nair, Bair and Uair.
  •  Do not roll too much. You could get hit by his ground DownB or SideB. Try jumping around.
  • If he whiffs a grab while you are close to him, use Jabs or Dtilt.
  • Below him is risky as he will use aerial DownB. If there's enough distance, try Utilt. Spot dodge does not work due to the area hit.
  • Never be above him or his Uair will beat your options.

Advantage

  • Edgeguard as much as possible, especially with Jump or Speed Art. It is possible to gimp him at 0% if you read his DJ. Ex: Bthrow at the ledge -> run off stage -> Fair -> read his DJ -> Fair.
  • In Jump Art, try to stage spike with Bair, especially if Ganondorf loses his ledge invincibility.
  • Stay away from the ledge. His UpB can hit Shulk through the ledge, and you have to watch out for the sudden SideB. Try to bait, avoid, and punish. Depending on who is in the lead, watch out for SideB's suicide. If you are not in the lead, edgeguarding is risky.
  • On platform stages, his aerial SideB can force Shulk on top of the side platform. Ganondorf can lead this to a kill setup (dash attack, Dtilt, etc.).
  • Learn their UpB (and SideB) recovery habits. A good Ganondorf can mix up their recovery to fall down the ledge, instead. If you read this, Fair or Air Slash can beat it. Back Nair can beat his UpB (preferably with Jump Art).
  • Try Uthrow since Ganondorf has terrible air speed. If he jumps away, DJ and use Fair, Uair, or Air Slash. With Air Slash, it can be a kill setup.

Disadvantage

  • If knocked offstage while you are cycling Arts, he can use Dair to punish you if you are not paying attention.
  • If offstage, Ganondorf can use Utilt since Air Slash does not snap on the ledge. His Uair can also send Shulk further away, so do not be above him.
  • If you roll in to get back on stage, Ganondorf can use smash attacks to kill you.
  • Getting caught by his SideB can lead to nasty follow ups (0-80%). Mix your retreat options and hope to avoid his SideB, Dair, or Fsmash.
  • If on the ground and hit by Ganondorf's aerial DownB, tech it.
  • Ganondorf has an easy time ledge trumping > Bair. Avoid this ledge trump.
  • In Jump Art, if knocked to the very edge of the blast zone, spam your DJ to survive.

Other Notes

  •  Ganondorf's DownB heading to the ledge can cancel and follow up with other options (Uair, Dair, SideB, etc). Watch out for that, especiallly if you are at kill %.
  • Since Ganondorf is the tallest character, the side of Shulk's Uair can connect.
  • On BF, his DownB can reach the other side platform. His Usmash can reach up the side platform. His SideB on the platform makes him free fall to mix up his movements.
  • On Yoshi's Island (3DS), his DownB can land on the Blarrggwich and meteor smash Shulk below.
